Ok, so I might be a little radical here, but I’m going to go ahead and argue that Twitter is more of a quantity game than it is a quality game. That’s not to say that you don’t want targeted Twitter followers. I wouldn’t have written this post otherwise.

In any case, I can’t think of any negative effects to having a whole bunch of followers on Twitter. It doesn’t cost you anything to have more followers like it does to have a larger email list. Just make sure you follow back the people you want to connect with so they can DM you. Otherwise you’re missing out on a big advantage of Twitter.

With that being said you’ll still want to go try to get targeted followers so I’m not going to talk about followback lists or auto adding tools or anything like that. I’m talking about getting legit followers that want to listen to you. Many of them will happen naturally, but some you will have to seek out.

Keep in mind throughout this list that according to Dan Zarrella of Hubspot, and the author of the Social Media Marketing Book you want to try to keep your follower count higher than your following count. Data shows that people are less likely to follow you if you have more than a 1:1 following to follower ratio.

Typically people won’t follow you back after 3 days. To find the people who aren’t following you check out Twitter Karma. It’s a free tool that works legally (right now) with the Twitter API.

With that being said. Here’s the list of how to get more targeted twitter followers.

1.) Find the most influential people in your market and check out their followers. Follow their followers. These are likely people who would like to follow you (Tip: If you @mention their name before you follow them you will increase the chance that they will follow you back). Careful not to follow too many people at once or you’ll violate the 1:1 rule and appear spammy. Try to make this a natural process. Keep it to 20 a day or so.

This is a great task for a VA to do for you.

2.) Make use of hashtags when posting updates. This will allow people that are searching that term find you easier. Don’t spam hashtags. Try to keep it to a max of two per update and make sure you throw in hashtagless (yes, I made that a word) updates from time to time.

3.) Use search.twitter.com or the twitter search box to find people who are tweeting about your specific search terms. For example if you like to Tweet about health you might search, diet, exercise, fitness, biggest loser, etc. Follow these people and hope for a follow back. Most Twitter management tools such as TweetDeck have a search feature built in that does the same thing.

4.) Participate in events that make us of Twitter hashtags – Many webinars and even live events such as #IMS (Inbound Marketing Summit) in the social media and internet marketing space will use hashtags that allow users to comment on Twitter about their experiences. You can get the attention of a lot of new followers this way, not to mention learn a lot.

5.) Get a custom bumper sticker or t-shirt made with @Yourtwittername on it (Caution: Only do this if you’re comfortable with being recognized as a complete geek)

6.) Use a Twitter scheduling tool to tweet throughout the day. The more you use Twitter (and provide quality tweets), the more followers you are going to have, plain and simple. Different people are on Twitter at different times, usually quite randomly. Most people can’t be on Twitter all day, nor do they want to be. It can be one hell of a distraction.

Scheduling tweets in advance will allow you to be at least somewhat active all day instead of in 10 minute Tweet bursts. There are a ton of tools out there that let you schedule Tweets. I prefer TweetDeck for its simplicity. Just get up a few minutes early, schedule 10 tweets or so and hit the road.

7.) Be visible! Put your @username on your business cards, email signature, Linkedin profile, Facebook page, blog, coffee mug, lunchbox, mousepad, forehead tattoo, etc. Obviously I’m being a little over the top here, but you get the idea. Just make your @username visible in a lot of places.

8.) Speak at an event or host a Webinar – Any time you are visible in the public eye you should be throwing your Twitter name out there. If not actively, just post it somewhere where people can see it (like as a watermark on your slides). Following someone on Twitter is the easiest thing in the world to do. Don’t just put up a sign that says follow me on Twitter though. This is a mistake a lot of people make. Actually write our your @username. Make it easy for people to find you!

9.) Become Verified – So this one only works for highly recognizable figures or people who are in danger of being impersonated, but if you are in this special interest group this is a way to one, protect yourself against being impersonated, and two, get a ton of new followers. People gravitate to verified accounts so if you’re a big name and you’re not verified go here to Verify Your Twitter Account.

10.) Get retweeted and mentioned – This one is a bit more tricky because it involves being good at Tweeting, but basically if you put out good useful content and you are kind in @mentioning others you are going to get mentions and tweets yourself. Once you’ve built up some Twitter relationships you can send messages to your followers asking that they @mention you to their followers to follow you.

Check out DanZarrella’s Science of Retweets report on danzarrella.com if you want to learn more about getting retweeted.

11.) Create a cool background – If you know a designer or if you’re good at design yourself make sure your Twitter background is sleek, cool, and professional looking (note the clever use of subjective terminology). There are many custom background services online that will do this for you for a few bucks. Just Google “custom twitter background” to find more.

At the very least use a sleek default background so you don’t look like you just hashed something together. The default background is better than a poorly done custom background.

12.) Make following you valuable – Make it so people HAVE to follow you on Twitter to get some sort of deal about your service. Twitter only coupon codes and discounts. Twitter only blog updates. Twitter only secret low down info. Provide a unique value. This works well for retailers. Anyone can apply this however.

For instance you can tweet a keyword rich hashtagged tweet and say all new followers before the end of the day get something free.

13.) Go to a Tweetup – Man I may have jumped off the geek deep end here, but this is actually a great way to not only get more Twitter followers, but also meet a lot of cool people. For those who don’t know Tweetups are real-life in person (gasp) meetings of Twitter users. You could go bowling, do karaoke, or whatever. Some people even wear @username nametags. Odds are you’re not going to be connected with everyone there. You’re bound to get a few new followers out of the deal.

Take a notepad and make a list of people to follow.

14.) Hold a Random Contest – People like free stuff, especially when they don’t have to do anything to get it. A good example is to offer a cool and inexpensive prize that will appeal to your target audience to a random new follower over the period of a week. Tweet about this a few times a day with different keywords and hashtags, post it on your blog, email signature, LinkedIn status, Facebook status, etc. You’ll get some people who just want the goodies, but if you target your bribe (prize) well you’ll also grab a bunch of new followers.

This works best when can recruit some people to Retweet your contest for you. Think strategically when you’re doing this one, and don’t spend TOO much on your bribe.

15.) Post a real picture of yourself – Unless you’re in the business of deceiving your followers it helps to have a picture of yourself that depicts you for who you are. Spend a few minutes getting all prettied up take a picture specifically for your Twitter profile. Don’t crop a friend out of a picture. Don’t use your company logo, and don’t use the default icon. Post a real picture of you!

16.) Fill out your profile completely – Probably the best way to get someone not to follow you is by having an incomplete profile. If you don’t list anything in your profile people don’t know what you do. All you have to do is fill out 160 characters. Fill that sucker out and make sure it appeals to your target audience. This will have a large effect on your follower count.

17.) Guest Blog for Your Followers – This one can actually be really powerful. If you create content for people you follow you not only develop relationship with them on Twitter, but you can also get a backlink to your website, and benefit from the retweeting of your article. Just make sure you get your Twitter name added to the post with a link to follow you if you’re going to do it for free.

Maybe down the road they will guest blog for you in return.

Follow these 17 tips (or at least a few of them) and you’ll be sure to have tons of targeted twitter followers than love to read your content. Knowing how to leverage social media to get traffic to your website is an incredible advantage over your competitors.

The use of Twitter as a medical marketing tool is becoming increasingly common. Twitter is a micro-blogging service that allows you to post updates of 140 characters. Twitter can be a very useful tool for physicians to market their practice because it enables them to expand your web presence, connect with patients, network with other physicians, and much more. However, according to a study conducted by the Nielson Co., only 40% of Twitter users remain active after one month of creating an account. The doctors who stick around on Twitter must recognize the incredible value that Twitter has in medical marketing.

How to Get Started

If you want to get started using Twitter for medical marketing but don’t know how to go about it, make a personal account first. By doing so, you can observe the community and learn how Twitter works. You won’t have to worry about making mistakes and tarnishing your brand if you create an anonymous account in the beginning. Once you get the drift, you can create an account to market your practice. You may choose to use your full name or the name of your practice as your Twitter name. If you choose to use a name besides your full name, consider registering a Twitter account with your full name any way to protect your personal brand identity. You can redirect users to the Twitter account you actually use in case they come upon the account you made with your full name.

As you accumulate followers on Twitter, keep in mind that it is usually looked down upon if you follow many people but have few followers in comparison. You can also be considered a Twitter snob if you have many followers and do not reciprocate. If you’re ultimately trying to promote your business on Twitter, you can’t really afford to not reciprocate when someone follows you.

Be Authentic

Unlike other marketing tools, Twitter is not a one-way conversation. Twitter allows you to build relationships and facilitate dialogue. Authenticity is valued on Twitter so make sure to let your personality shine through your Tweets. Although your Twitter account may have been created to represent your business, forging personal connections and building relationships is an important aspect of succeeding in social media marketing.

Avoid Being Sales

Avoid blatant self-promotion. It is an unwritten rule on Twitter that it is taboo to promote yourself and market your goods unless you have already established a place in the community. You must provide value without expecting anything in return.

Protect Your Brand Image

Keep in mind that Google indexes Tweets. So never tweet anything that you wouldn’t want to reveal to the general public. Upon searching for your brand on Google, people may come across your individual Tweets, even years after they were posted.

Use Hash tags

There are an increasing number of healthcare-related communities popping up on Twitter. These communities are formed around hashtags. When using Twitter, you can add a hashtag such as #healthcare or #medical to your Tweets and they will be visible anytime someone searches for those particular hashtags. Searching for hashtags is also a good way to find influential people in the healthcare community to follow on Twitter. Furthermore, you can use hashtags to monitor what is being said about your practice or field.

Extend the Reach of Your Marketing Messages

The real power of Twitter lies in the fact that you can reach thousands of people in one place. Many people will choose a physician simply because they have noticed their presence on Twitter. Some physicians have even used Twitter to post a play-by-play of surgery live. Doing so is an inexpensive way to attract media attention as well as connect with patients and prospects. After tweeting about surgeries, medical practices may find that they can double or even triple their following on Twitter. Furthermore, they are likely to attract new patients who found out about their services via Twitter.

Using Twitter is also an effective way for doctors to communicate with their patients and prospects. However, most doctors probably have few patients who are actually using Twitter so at this point Twitter is more useful when it comes to connecting with anyone in the general population who is seeking health care information. Twitter is an excellent tool for physicians to use to educate the masses and help them make healthier lifestyle choices.

Twitter has also proven to be an effective tool for disseminating information during public health scares, such as the one that took place with H1N1 flu. There was lots of hysteria and misinformation floating around on Twitter. The CDC and other health organizations used Twitter to educate people about the H1N1 flu and spread information.

Physicians can also use Twitter to connect with other physicians. It is hard to facilitate much dialogue in tweets of 140 characters, but you can share links to articles of interest and valuable resources. Rather than treating their Twitter presence as an authoritative presence, many doctors use Twitter to connect with other doctors on a personal level.

If you decide to create an account on Twitter, keep in mind that you will need to dedicate time and resources to maintain your account. Building a Twitter presence for medical marketing purposes requires an ongoing investment so you must be sure that you can indeed keep up with the commitment before diving in.

Twitter is one of the fastest growing marketplaces on the Internet. The reason why so many people like Twitter is because it is actually the perfect communication tool for people who don’t understand and don’t want to learn about Internet technology and the technological geek-speak that goes along with it.

A few years back, I asked someone for his dad’s email address. The son replied telling me that you just email his name. The son was clueless that there was an actual email address behind the shortcut for his dad’s name. He did not understand email, and he did not care that he did not understand it. He was able to use it in a manner that was easy for him, and that is all that really mattered.

What makes Twitter so popular to the masses is that one does not have to be tech-savvy to use the service. The new user simply needs to locate the profile of the person he or she wants to follow, and then the user simply clicks “Follow”. From that day forward, anytime the person “Followed” posts (tweets) new information to his or her micro-blog, Followers will be notified about the message in the Twitter Timeline.

The only thing that is really difficult about Twitter is that new people seldom understand that they must “Follow” someone, before they start to receive messages from others. But once someone has chosen to follow a few people, they get the idea behind Twitter very quickly.

With its system of 140 character micro-posts (referred to as “tweets”), users are able to communicate information to other users. Sometimes the tweeted info is a random comment, but often the tweets mean something to somebody.

For the average consumer, they can log into Twitter to update grandma about the lives of the grandchildren and to provide links to family pictures.

Although the service has been available since 2006, the Internet marketing community was really slow to catch on to the value of the Twitter community. Most Internet marketers had never heard of Twitter until 2008. Even then, online marketers were slow to see any real value in the platform. But in 2009, Twitter finally hit its stride in getting the word out about its service, in large part due to the Ashton Kutcher vs. CNN Twitter Follower Challenge.

Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) challenged CNN (@cnnbrk) to a race to one million Twitter Followers. On April 17th, 2009, Ashton became the first Twitter user to reach one million followers. CNN passed the mark a few hours later, but Ashton won the race fair and square.

Understanding The Value Of The Twitter Community

In March of 2008, Twitter was estimated to have one million active users, according to Michael Arrington of TechCrunch. But amazingly, over the course of the following year, Twitter was able to expand its user base by 32-37 times, according to which news source you trust for your data.

On July 30th 2009, the Philadelphia Enquirer reported that Twitter had “increased its user base by 37-fold to more than 32 million users worldwide, 18-20 million of whom reside in the United States”

Now, the naysayers are fond of pointing out that Twitter’s attrition rate is quite large, with 60% of new users disappearing after signing up for the service. But if the Philadelphia Enquirer’s estimation is correct that “only 40 percent of first-timers become habitual visitors”, then the remaining 12.8 million users still make a viable and vibrant Twitter community.

Each individual user inside the Twitter community is capable of building his or her own community of Followers.

As Ashton Kutcher has taught us, building a Follower list is fairly straight forward – when people are interested in you and what you have to say, they will follow you on Twitter to see what you have to say.

To date, nearly 3 million Twitter users have decided that they care enough about Kutcher’s life to follow his personal tweets. Of course, I am sure it helps that he occasionally posts pictures of his wife, Demi Moore, in his tweets. Not only did Kutcher share a shot of his Demi’s derriere, he also proved that rich people have ugly furniture too.

How Can One Benefit From A Large Twitter Following?

Some of Twitter’s 12.8 million active users will benefit handsomely for building a larger Follower’s list, while other people will not.

It is pointed out by @ web2marketer, “It’s not about how many Twitter followers you have…the only thing that matters is – are they listening?”

This is the key, of course.

Some people build huge lists of Followers, but never say anything worthwhile or interesting. Some are only interested in building their Followers list for the sake of building Followers.

If no one wants to listen to what you have to say, it does not matter whether you have 1 Follower or 2.9 million Followers. If no one is “listening” to what you have to say, you will not make any money from your participation in Twitter.

On the other hand, if people are “listening” to what you have to say and “clicking” the links you tell them to click, then you have a good chance of earning real money as a result of your Twitter activities.

It has been said that the consumer needs to see or hear your name or your marketing message 7 times, before they will trust you enough to buy from you. Professionals in the direct marketing industry suggest that 82% of all consumers (business people or otherwise) will buy your products or services on the second to the ninth exposure to your marketing message.

Twitter allows you to carry a continuous dialog with those most likely to buy what you are selling – through the Public Timeline of the people following you in Twitter. Once people have started to pay attention to what you tell them, and once they start absorbing your marketing message, then gaining your Followers trust is made easier. Once people are listening to you, you can earn their trust fairly quickly.

An idea presented by @contentmanager is that television has had 80+ years to perfect its advertising model. Television seems committed to the concept of 42 minutes of content to anchor 18 minutes of advertising. These numbers translate into 70% content to provide an anchor for its 30% advertising. (http://twitter.com/contentmanager/status/3106295397) In context, he says that the 70% content is designed to attract attention and win trust, and then the 30% advertising is designed to earn profits and cover the costs of building content.

Understand That It Is A Numbers Game

As a successful Twitter marketer, your first goal is always to attract Followers (an audience). Your second goal is to win the trust of your Followers (your viewing audience). Only after you have won the trust of your Followers should you endeavor to advertise to your Twitter Followers list (to earn revenue). If you have earned the trust of your Twitter Followers, revenue is certain to follow.

But, as with anything in business, it is a numbers game. A certain percentage of the number of people exposed to your Twitter profile will become Followers. A certain percentage of those people following you, will actually read what you have to say. A certain percentage of those people will click your links. And if that link leads to a page where you can earn revenue, only a certain percentage of people will buy your offer.

For most people, the only certainty is that they need to grow their audience, and in the case of the Twitter community, they need to grow their list of Twitter Followers. In the numbers game, if you can increase your audience, you can increase your revenue. It is as simple as that.

If you visit the website shown below, you will find practical tools that can help you build your Followers’ list. But after that, it is up to you. It is up to you to gain the interest and trust of your Followers. Once you have done that, then the only thing that will matter is – are they listening?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have probably heard of Twitter. It is a rocking hot social networking site that seems to be to be used by almost everyone today. It’s on the news, on the radio and on the minds of thousands of people everywhere, every single day.

There are many different types of people on Twitter. But, most of these people are on Twitter for a single reason. They want people to know about them. They want to connect with people. Lots of people.

Did you know that there are Twitter Rules for marketing and business success in what you do. I am a marketer and have been for many years. In the last few years my business has been expanding by leaps and bounds, because of social media and the internet. But, there are rules that all marketers must follow if they are going to have success in the marketplace, especially online.

Here are the 7 Simple Rules to Success on Twitter:

1) The Rule of Visibility on Twitter.

You absolutely MUST be visible on Twitter if you are going to get your message out to the masses. You must spend time on Twitter and get to know people. You must put yourself together a “Twitter Blueprint” and then work that bluprint every day. How many hours a day are you going to be seen on Twitter? How many people are you going to follow this week? How many times are you going to Tweet this week? How many direct replies will you make? All of these things make you “visible” on Twitter. Be seen and be heard. Be there on a daily basis.

2) The Rule of a Powerful Twitter Profile.

Why would people want to get to know you on Twitter? One of the first things they will check out is your Twitter profile. What does it say, or better yet, what does it do? Does it make people curious and want to get to know you? Does it make them smile? Does it make them think? Does it make them see that you have value for their life and perhaps can help change it?
Powerful Twitter profiles are NOT based on what is said in your profile, but on what your profile DOES. Does it direct them to DO something? Does it tell them you are a person they really need to get to know? Put yourself OUT THERE and tell the world why they need you as a friend, and get them to take some action towards YOU.

3) The Rule of Twittering.

You MUST use Twitter to market or to share your message. Many people regard Twitter as a communication utility much like an email. It is not! Twitter is a method for you to build – MESSAGE BY MESSAGE – FOLLOW BY FOLLOW – PHOTO BY PHOTO – VIDEO BY VIDEO – your brand on Twitter. Every time something happens with you, Twitter about it. Don’t just look at Twitter, get your messages out there and be seen. Answer the messages on Twitter. Thank people for sharing their Tweet with you. This will show up on their Twitter and even more people will see you. This will set you apart from most people on Twitter. Twitter is basically a billboard of what you and your friends are doing on Twitter. So use it often and use it wisely. Don’t forget that everyone is watching what you say.

4) The Rule of Twitter Networking.

You are part of a Twitter and you have access to that huge network of people to become their friend and business partner. You can live anywhere and have access to this huge audience. There are literally thousands of people on Twitter that you could potentially meet and then get to know and connect with. You can find local Twitterers as well. You will find that Twitter is a gold mine of people to connect with and build trust with. This may lead to business down the road. So go Twitter now!

5) The Rule of Twitter Direct Messages.

This can be an overlooked and rarely talked about Twitter tool. Direct messages are part of your “Twitter System.” Go to Direct Messages in your sidebar. This is a list of people who are thinking about you, talking about you, including you and connecting with you. This is a goldmine of people that have proven that they are behind you and willing to make you a part of their Twitter experience. Pay attention to your Twitter messages. Thank them for their thoughts and let them know you appreciate it. Reply back to them whenever possible. The Direct Messages are gold and can be a prospecting Vault of valuable leads. Make sure you stay connected to them.

6) The Rule of Twitter Pictures and Videos.

Sharing photos and videos on Twitter is HOT. People love photos and videos. The Tweets with photos and videos are the most looked at and watched Tweets on Twitter. Make some videos and upload them. Upload some photographs. Not only will they be seen, but they will also be Re-Tweeted many times. This means that you can pick out Tweets you like and share them with others. Now isn’t that cool? It is called exposure! It allows you to post a photo or video that you like and then it sends it out for all of Twitter to see. It shares the image that you want and allows everyone to see a glimse into your personal life. It helps people see you as a real person and not just a website, so share some of your personal life on Twitter. Find interesting photos and videos of others and send them out as well. People love to look at pictures and watch videos. Use this to your advantage. It will build exposure for you.

7) The Rule of Twitter Search.

When you do a Twitter search, it is going to bring you a list of people who have a lot in common with you. Just go to search.Twitter.com and type in what you are searching for. You’ll find a lot of other Twitterers who are Tweeting about what interests you. You can build a list in your own area of expertise and then you can send Twitter direct messages to them. Make sure they are messages of value and interest. Show them that you are an expert in this field. This gives you huge exposure. Whatever you do, like posting a message, uploading a video or photo, writing and publishing an article, or just commenting on another person’s message on the Twitter, it will show up on Twitter. Be seen, and be seen often if you are trying to brand yourself on Twitter.

You need to establish relationships and build a community to market to. But, if you are going to market on Twitter, then you need to at least get a blueprint of how and when to do it. The 7 Rules of Twitter hopefully gave you some ideas in your social media marketing. Please let me know what you think and what ideas you have.

You are likely to make some mistakes when doing Twitter marketing. You must make sure that you think about the possible mistakes which can hinder proper advance in your marketing strategy. There are ways to help you avoid these costly mistakes which can waste your time, effort and make you feel disappointed.

Today every business is using Twitter blogging to make their presence felt. This is right and can be good for your business. However, you need to know that Twitter is not a perfect way to market your products. There are mistakes which can occur and cause embarrassments which can cost you a lot of money. When you are new to Twitter you need to learn how to avoid making mistakes when marketing your products.
Here are some of the common mistakes in Twitter marketing which you should avoid.

Directionless tweeting

You should not just market your products using Twitter to become equal with your competitors. This can cost you money and your precious time only to realize that it will not change your return on investments. Come up with a good strategy to follow when using Twitter marketing to increase your sales. This will ensure that you do not carry out futile tweeting which gives does not give you any profits.

Unprofessionalism

You must know how to behave when dealing with other people on Twitter. You have to be professional just like you do when you are in the office. Avoid doing anything which will make you look unprofessional. On your Twitter profile you must include a good photo, business name and also make sure that you place proper information about your business. Make sure that you get good keywords and it will make you gain more followers. If you use a bad picture and fail to make your profile noticeable, you will not make any progress in your marketing strategy.

Business-centric tweeting

Twitter marketing gives you a chance to gain customers. This makes most people try hard to advertise their commodities and business and they forget about their customers. It is good to promote your business, but you need to set aside some time to cater for your customers. Make sure that you answer their questions and handle their complainants accordingly. This will ensure that your marketing strategy becomes effective. A good image will lead to a great reputation which will bring in more clients and profits will be flowing.

Bad tweeting

This happens when you Tweet things that you will live to regret. Simple mistakes can ruin your Twitter marketing and most people have learned this through mistakes which they have made in the past. You can make sure that you are careful about each Tweet you post on your business account. You should do it the way you usually give proper thought on business official memo. This will ensure that you do not offend your clients.

No progress monitoring

You need to make sure that you monitor the progress of your business. This will increase your return on investments and help your business grow fast.

Twitter is the fastest growing social media site with over 20 million visitors. These numbers can not be ignored. It is a great way to attract traffic. Twitter provides excellent online visibility. Its largest demographic is for thirty-five to forty-five-year-olds. It also provides instant communication between online visitors. A tweet can be sent out on the site. You are only allowed to send a message or tweet of 140 characters or less. This enables you to attract attention and set up an expert platform too.

Social media enables anyone to contact a lot of people in a short time. This is very difficult to do in the offline world. Twitter’s power in the social media game can not be ignored. With Facebook it is much tougher to get clients directly. Twitter is set up to do so effectively. Twitter’s power also lets individuals explain what they may need. This is so powerful. It is much easier to spot this on Twitter than Facebook. Facebook is very powerful too.

Social media sites all possess different powers for individuals and businesses. The key is to notice the differences and to use them accordingly. You get 140 characters to send a tweet or respond to one.

Your tweets or messages make up a timeline. When people subscribe to your timeline, your tweets show up on their home page. You can follow anyone you want on Twitter. Facebook does not allow you to do this. It must be mutual on Facebook. You get a name on Twitter. It must be short and memorable. When your name is small, it is much easier and faster for your followers to retweet your messages. You can reply to someone’s tweets by typing @username and then your message. When someone sends an “@” reply, it will show up on your homepage and will also be filed under your replies tab. These replies are public and everyone can see them.

You can send direct messages but you must stay within the 140 character parameters. You can only send these messages to people who are following you. These direct messages are hidden from public view and shown only to the recipient. A direct message can be sent by clicking the direct messages link in the right-hand column. A window will open allowing you to type the recipient’s name and your message. The power of Twitter can not be overlooked. You can build your business through social media sites like Twitter. We just touched the surface on how to use this social media powerhouse.

Twitter can be a useful medium in the hands of a non-profit organization if some thought and planning is put into the effort. The use of this 140-character limited message system generates pointed messages to people following the “tweets” of the organization.

The goals for using Twitter are the same as for the use of any medium. It is the technique that is different. This tool is used to capture the interest of people who will check in regularly, or become followers, and may convert to a donor of money, goods or services.

The technique requires creating short messages that convey excitement or opportunities that a person can’t miss. They can also be informational messages that followers will find interesting and helpful.

Some examples of reasons to use Twitter and sample messages include:

* Announce upcoming events at the organization – “Silent Auction tonight – Come see our art!”

* Announce changes in the organization – “Meet our new director this Saturday!”

* Announce new and/or unique services – “Call us now to pick up your Xmas tree – $5 donation!”

* Announce new opportunities – “New kittens are ready to adopt!”

* Announce status of projects – “The new building addition was completed right on time!” followed by “Stop by the Open House this Friday!”

* Announce specific needs – “We need donors for our winter coat program!”

The effectiveness of social networking is in getting people to send out your message to their friends and network (“retweet” in Twitter terms). This could mean posting the message on a web site, bulletin board, forum or Facebook page. Adding a reminder to the tweet such as “Pass me on!” encourages people to use their networks to get even more visibility.

Frequent short and interesting messages will draw people to follow the tweets from the company. The world of social networking is one of fast, concise, high interest content. Putting out bland, unexciting messages or pausing for several days before putting out new messages will bore followers and make them place their attention elsewhere.

The proper use of social networks in business, and non-profits, is becoming a common goal in any company. Many organizations hire media staff who are familiar with the various forms of social networking including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and others. These people are familiar with the shortcuts and slang used within these tools. Sites such as bit.ly provide a service which shortens the Internet URL’s allowing lengthy addresses to be used in these concise messages. The knowledge of such tools that have been created in response to social networking is a valuable asset in any company now.

It takes practice and experience to come up with 140 words or less that may require 400-500 words using another media. The goal of the words is the same, though…excite and entice!

Twitter can be a great place for inspiration for your new kitchen design and so we’ve decided to compile a number of great ways in which it can help, making it all the easier for you and give you a few ideas along the way.

Concept to Realisation

Bringing concept to realisation can be done simply through social media. Of course the medium gives you the opportunity to find any number of kitchen design sites across the world to take inspiration from. By merely searching for ‘kitchen design’, or something similar you’ll find a number of kitchen designers, many of whom are willing to provide you with tips and tricks in the kitchen design area, as well as an idea of where you should go with your new area.

Credits: http://www.all-designs.net/

Online Deals

Not only this, but you will often be the very first person to get in on special deals and offers from such companies. Social media has become a great place to get the very best deals and is often the first place they are advertised in not only the kitchen design sphere.

Influences

Of course, creating Twitter lists allows you to place your kitchen design influences into one area and so see a specific stream of these for your choosing. This also limits the amount of other information you have to trawl through to get tips, hints and great value when designing your new kitchen.

Hints and Tips

Some of the best companies for hints and tips when designing, or getting ideas for a new kitchen are the larger kitchen manufacturers. Though, you may not want to use a large kitchen manufacturer, many of them have quite substantial blogs and are constantly offering tips on how to improve your kitchen setup. Most of these blogs come through Twitter, with updates quite regularly. Of course, if you want, you can also just bookmark specific blogs in your browser and then decide on checking them during a time most convenient for you.

Go Off Beat

When using twitter it can be a great asset to check all blogs first and then find ones that agree with your style. However, you should also look into blogs that don’t as these are often the places where you find those nice, off-beat ideas that really make your kitchen stand out and can really impress.

Of course, you may not be the only person on twitter who is at such activities and you can use the site as a great way to ask questions to other people about what they’re doing. People are often quite interested in each other in such a sphere and you can take advantage of this and use it to broaden your design ideas.

Twitter can also be used to make direct contact with a manufacturer and ask them a question about the new kitchen design, or whatever else you desire. This is far easier and faster to use than traditional mail and is usually answered within a short period of time by the manufacturer. So, as is clear Twitter is the perfect tool for all your kitchen design questions.

When Twitter first turned up people were a bit bemused by this website that only allowed people to communicate in 140 characters or less. I must admit I found it a little bemusing and amusing to tell you the truth as to what enjoyment let alone benefit would come of a site that allowed only one sentence to communicate. Now Twitter is essential for online marketing.

How wrong was I! Social media is now critical for most businesses in their marketing plans. Twitter is now used by over 75 million people across the globe. We have now seen the power of Twitter when it was used by Egyptians during their 2011 uprising, and the Queensland Police who used it to maximum effectiveness for information distribution during devastating floods and Cyclone Yasi at the beginning of 2011.

Businesses have now well and truly grasped the benefits of using Twitter and Facebook for their online marketing strategy. Most big businesses tweet and many medium sized businesses do as well. There is no reason why small business can’t use Twitter to boost credibility, find sales leads and boost their website search engine optimisation.

But as a small business, how do you use Twitter to get the full benefit?

Lets’ take a look at some rules of the game that may help:

Tweet often (at least once a day)

Use hashtags to link your tweets to specific and relevant subject areas. This means your tweets will hit a ready audience. For instance if I tweet the following “Check out these killer #onlinemarketing strategies…”.By using the hashtag onlinemarketing now becomes a hyperlink. When people click this link they will be taken to the #onlinemarketing subject page where you will find lots of other online marketing ideas.

Follow lots of people (because they will probably return the favour).

Follow your competitors. This is important because people who follow your competitors are interested in what you both have to offer so they will see you have followed someone they have followed and then they are likely to follow you. Sounds confusing but it works.

Don’t use Twitter to flog your product or service, use it to promote your industry knowledge and therefore credibility. This is all about trust marketing and relationship building.

Make sure you have your website on your profile page.

Put a picture up instead of the default Twitter avatar.

Consider using programs such as Hootsuite to schedule your tweets.

Target niche areas so you’re not competing with hundreds of other businesses.

Try to respond personally to those who are talking on Twitter about your business

These are just a few ways to use Twitter as part of an online marketing campaign for small business to boost website traffic.

With any social media strategy every small business must be aware not to spam ie direct promotion. There is a much more powerful selling tool for online selling known as Trust Marketing. Build your credibility and expertise so people can trust you. This will make direct promotion much easier down the track.

Like any online marketing tool Twitter takes some a concerted and consistent effort but can pay massive dividends.
